Today, the Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS) celebrates its 18th anniversary, marking nearly two decades of partnership between OC San and the Orange County Water District (OCWD).
And that’s not the only milestone worth celebrating. The GWRS has officially surpassed more than 500 billion gallons of purified water produced!
Through the GWRS, highly treated water from OC San is sent to OCWD for further purification, resulting in enough water for one million people across Orange County. Since operations began in 2008, the system has played a key role in protecting local groundwater supplies and replenishing the Orange County Groundwater Basin.
Congratulations to our staff and OCWD for making this achievement possible!
Want to see the process start to finish? OC San and OCWD both offer FREE tours to take you through the full journey—from wastewater collection and treatment to three-step purification through the GWRS. Sign up for an OC San tour here and an OCWD tour here.
